Fashion: Too Damn Hot to Wear Suits

I truly hate this time of year in Austin. My sense of fashion flies out the window. Hats, scarves, cardigans- everything I love I can not wear unless I want to melt like this playground here:

I'm from the North so my idea of fashion involves layers. I like sleek, tailored and imaginative. Actually, I really just like wearing suits. Full-on dude's suits. Been wearing them since I was a little girl. Probably the first time I realized I loved wearing suits was the day I dressed as Rod Serling for no reason. It felt so good to put on a jacket and tie and impersonate my writing hero. Serling always looked so cool and collected up on the TV screen and that's how I wanted to look.

This sounds like the beginning of a Born This Way blog post, the day I realized when I was a boy trapped in a girl's body, but alas, it's not that interesting. I just really like suits. Love them. Love the way they look on me and other women. I don't just fancy suits either- ties, bowties suspenders, and men's hats are also my jam. When I first saw the music video for Janelle Monae's "Tightrope", I was like, "Shit, that woman knows where it's at."

I used to wear suits and ties in high school. A few kids made fun of me- called me a dyke- and I became super self-conscious. Little did I know that some of my peers actually dug my sense of style- though they wouldn't tell me until years later. You see, nowadays, I don't even think about that stuff. Whether you think I'm a dyke or crazy or attention-starved, I like wearing the suits because they make me feel good. It's an extension of my personality.

Now if it would only cool off so I can put my freaking tuxedo jacket on!

Do you like wearing mens clothing? Do you think it looks good on ladies?

I love them too! I'm definitely a tuxedo blazer kind of girl. Today it is actually below 80 in NYC so I dressed like it was fall. Hippie poncho and riding boots. Everyone can kiss my ass.

suits are cool!
Some people find it ironic that I wear men's clothing...but whatever. Women look great in men's/men's inspired clothing.
Living where I do, you can barely wear layers in winter without melting. So, I feel your summer outfit pain!

Yes and yes. I actually think women look really sexy in men's clothing! I love that you called out Jonaelle Monae. In that photo especially she looks super fine because she is screaming confidence and style. Same with you in your bow tie and blazer.

It is when worn like in your photos... some other times not so much.

I love men's clothing that has been redesigned for women. Mostly, I love power suits. I LOVE POWER SUITS. My main reason for wanting a job, a real job, is so that i can rock those.

I did the tie thang in high school as well, because ties rock.

Men have it good.

You are sooo adorable!

When I was young, my brother and I would put on our Moms smocks and housecoats... we felt pretty then and I STILL try to look 'pretty' more than trying to look handsome...

...wouldn't it be cool if there was like a Sadie Hawkins Day for dressing up? I would love to wear a mini skirt and show off my legs..!

I love dressing boyish. Personally I think it's hot, and it makes me feel nice. Extra feminine even. Button downs, blazers, bow ties, oh my!

Lauren, I adore wearing a tuxedo suit! Nothing looks as good on little old me. I also work man-ish clothes part of the time in high school. Loose Bermuda shorts with suspenders....YEA!

Namaste..........cj

Reminds me of the Billy Joel song "still rock and roll to me".

Once upon a time I use to only wear men's clothing, but I was hardly stylish. My mother's only suggestion was to wear a dress or skirt. But I eventually learn to get it together and dress stylishly while still rocking men's clothes.

I wish we would stop instilling in children that you have to dress a certain way because of your gender. Dressing "feminine" does not make a guy gay nor does dressing "masculine" make a girl a lesbian.

Suits on ladies = chic. I used to have a white tuxedo jacket I'd wear with a totally inappropriate lime-green lacey, pouffy miniskirt. It was hot, I swear.

@MG- Ugh. You're so lucky. I would kill for 80 degrees! Poncho and riding boots sounds great! Just my style!

@Sophie- You go, sister! What are the cold temps you get there?

@Jennifer- Thank you! Yeah, Janelle Monae is the shit. She def screams confidence. Love her!

@IT- Ha! Well, thank you?

@Penny- HA! You should write a post about power suits!

@Mark- I think you may be on to something. Let's create a day where people don't care about gender norms!

@Natali- Agreed!

@CJ- Oh stop! I bet you can rock it!

@Emma- Awww... thank you!!!

@Kimmie- Ha. Now I have that song stuck in my head!

@The Mad Dame- Amen, sister! I 100% agree. Times are definitely getting better, but we still have a long way to go.

@Shoestring Austin- Oh. my. God. That outfit sounds awesome! Pics?

thanks girlie!
Well, today was about 20°c (68°F) which isn't much higher than average for winter here. We do get a couple of chilly nights a year of around 0°c (32°F)...basically we don't really get cold here. ever. Which is why a lot of people like it here. But it does get pretty windy.

I'll see if I can dig any up on the ol' hard drive, but I may only have the X-rated ones, sans jacket... ;)

I work at American Apparel, and so I grab all of the men's pants that have room to be let out and go off and get them tailored. The women's linen pants as well have that 1930s 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' look. It's great to take advantage of being able to wear the other sex's clothing, while in their case it's not as socially acceptable.
